Mothers of Sensory Kids

Do you know a mom who has a special needs child?  Mother's Day is coming up and you may or may not realize that mothers of special needs kids often find it difficult to get time off to care for themselves.  Kids with Aspergers Syndrome, ADHD, or Autism often require parents' full attention to function in our society.  In the photo above, my friend and I are enjoying a night out at a benefit for Autism.  Her son has Aspergers Syndrome.

What can you do to help a mother of a special needs child?  I am part of and serve the population of moms with special needs. Here is a suggestion from a friend who has four special needs kids:

"I think something to know is that is terribly difficult to think more than a day in advance, because so much of life is managing crises and not feeling like real living, at least that is how it is for me. The typical dreams for my children and myself are gone. I would want more compassion when I am very direct or I seem too hasty. Just kindness...a hand to hold. There is too much to be done for one person...good friendship is such a treasure but hard to nurture...come to us to spend time, if we can't get away... "

The best gift you can give a mom of a special needs child for Mother's Day is time, to herself, time away, or a night out.  Offer to watch her child for a few hours.  Help her find other special needs parents to trade child care with.  Be there to listen.  Spend time with her.
